About
Mosquitoes are flying insects that live throughout Idaho's outdoor spaces. They are most active in the spring and summer when with weather is hot and humid and there is plentiful rainfall. Female mosquitoes lay their eggs on top of standing water. Standing water is also where the newly hatched larvae develop into adult mosquitoes. If there is no standing water, there will be no place for mosquitoes to breed and produce more of these biting insects on your property.
Wooded areas, marshlands, fields, and, unfortunately, most of our backyards provide mosquitoes with the moisture, dense vegetation, and shade needed to support large numbers of these pests. In our yards, mosquitoes gather around standing water found in tires, buckets, flower pots, wood piles, clogged gutters, and overwatered gardens. Though mosquitoes don't purposely move into our homes, open windows and doors allow these pests to get inside.
Some of our most helpful mosquito prevention tips include:
Eliminate standing water in your yard to decrease breeding sites.
Keep bushes, trees, and landscaping well-trimmed to decrease mosquito hideouts.
Place screens in windows and doors to keep mosquitoes outside.
